By Mark Anthony
I often tell my students that I was born 100 years too late. I loved the romance of the old world of Europe since I was a boy. My colleagues tell me, ‘more like 400 years too late.’ Oh well. I do play modern music while I work. Edith Piaf, Nat King Cole, for instance. It keeps me from whistling… I still have this burning desire to understand how great forefathers of representational art created such powerful, gestural, poetic works with the simplest of hand-made tools. How did they know how to exploit every trick in the book to express dramatic human form and movement without our current resource of hundreds of years of examples to draw (pun intended) from.
The West Kootenay Chapter of the FCA is excited to be hosting a 3-day Alla Prima Oil Painting workshop April 22-24 with Ingrid Christensen. This workshop, “The Still Life Laboratory” will focus on alla prima oil painting.
Join Ingrid for 3 days of learning and experimentation in the still life lab. Working alla prima, you’ll learn to compose and paint a dynamic composition wet-in-wet. You’ll discover what it takes to turn ordinary objects into extraordinary paintings.
This workshop will focus on composition, colour and the different methods for starting a painting, from logical and methodical to intuitive and abstract. Ingrid’s bold and colourful paintings have won honours and awards in both national and international exhibitions. View Ingrid’s website at www.icartstudios.com

Enrich your Work with Mixed Media
Join award-winning mixed media artist Jennifer Heine for a guided exploration of a variety of media and how to exploit the advantages of each to enrich your work. We’ll create deceptively complex backgrounds with collage and acrylic to add depth and interest and build further with water soluble oils to resolve the painting. Painters are encouraged to put some of their odd and underused art supplies to good use but can choose to work throughout in the medium of their choice. Discover a new favourite medium or the limitless possibilities of working with different combinations. We’ll have the opportunity to work with gessoed paper or panel, mylar (if desired), textured collage and acrylic grounds, water-soluble oils, drawing materials, stencils, stamps, a variety of mark-making tools with the goal of gaining a better knowledge of the media, freeing ourselves up to work confidently with them to serve our inspiration and vision.

Back to school! As the poet Mark Strand already knew: “There is now end to what we can learn”. With that in mind we created an engaging education program with workshops and classes for artists at every level.
There are workshops that will help you boost your creativity such as Barbara Cadario’s class, “Art Journaling: An Adventure in Creativity”, workshops that will encourage students to challenge boundaries and try new media such as Drew Young’s class “Oil Painting in Abstraction” and workshops that to refine your skills in a certain medium such as Janice Robertson’s class “Acrylic Techniques – A Study of Nature” or Gaye Adams’ workshop “Alla Prima Oils – Fast and Fresh”.
The popular Monday’s at the Gallery series offers 1 to 2-day workshops, which are held at the Federation Gallery on Granville Island. Our Weekend Workshops are usually 2-day classed held at different locations in Metro Vancouver.
