Federation of Canadian Artists Announces 2019 Artists’ Retreat

  • The Federation of Canadian Artists are now taking bookings for their 2019 Retreat
  • Held at the Marine Sciences Centre in beautiful Bamfield, British Columbia
  • This six-day retreat, held between September 3rd – 8th, is led by Master Artist Instructors Brent Lynch, Charlie Easton and Sue Cowan

Vancouver, British Columbia – The life of an artist can be a solitary one, with hours hauled up in a studio, or spent balancing the line between “the day job” and your artistic pursuits. The Federation of Canadian Artists (FCA), Canada’s largest member-driven, non-profit arts organization, realizes that the plight of the artist is one best not tackled alone.

“Artists have always needed a community”, says FCA Education Coordinator Helen Duckworth, “A support network of peers where they can collaboratively create, critique and converse”.

The Federation’s artist retreats aim to foster just such a sense of community, through an annual gathering of artists in beautiful Canadian settings, sharing meals, enjoying activities together and painting en plein air under the guidance of Master Artist instructors who help them improve and develop upon their practice.

The 2019 instructors include Brent Lynch, Charlie Easton and Sue Cowan. Each instructor specializes in plein air painting and boasts an impressive resume of both teaching and exhibition experience.

The benefits of painter’s retreats are not to be dismissed. Painters have been adventuring on painting excursions together since before the days of the Group of Seven. “Spending a few days with fellow artists in nature makes us better and more inventive painters”, attests Lynch.

If you are looking to improve your artistic practice, while meeting like-minded peers and exploring one of the most stunning painting locations B.C has to offer, register for your place at www.fcaretreat.ca

Drawing the Human Form

Classes & Workshops, Special Features / Articles

By Mark Anthony

I often tell my students that I was born 100 years too late.  I loved the romance of the old world of Europe since I was a boy.  My colleagues tell me, ‘more like 400 years too late.’  Oh well.  I do play modern music while I work.  Edith Piaf, Nat King Cole, for instance.  It keeps me from whistling…  I still have this burning desire to understand how great forefathers of representational art created such powerful, gestural, poetic works with the simplest of hand-made tools.  How did they know how to exploit every trick in the book to express dramatic human form and movement without our current resource of hundreds of years of examples to draw (pun intended) from.

Enrich your Work with Mixed Media

Join award-winning mixed media artist Jennifer Heine for a guided exploration of a variety of media and how to exploit the advantages of each to enrich your work. We’ll create deceptively complex backgrounds with collage and acrylic to add depth and interest and build further with water soluble oils to resolve the painting. Painters are encouraged to put some of their odd and underused art supplies to good use but can choose to work throughout in the medium of their choice. Discover a new favourite medium or the limitless possibilities of working with different combinations. We’ll have the opportunity to work with gessoed paper or panel, mylar (if desired), textured collage and acrylic grounds, water-soluble oils, drawing materials, stencils, stamps, a variety of mark-making tools with the goal of gaining a better knowledge of the media, freeing ourselves up to work confidently with them to serve our inspiration and vision.

Dates: Nov 21 & 22, 2015
Time: 10:00 am to 4:30 pm
Price: FCA Members: $225 / Non-members: $250
