Art Wanted: Call for submissions launched for new Squamish neighbourhood public art project
SQUAMISH, B.C. – The District of Squamish is looking for artists with experience in producing artwork for public spaces for Squamish’s first public art competition. This new public art project called “Connecting Squamish Neighbourhoods” will see two or more permanent public art installations within different Squamish neighbourhoods. A public call for submissions was launched today by the District of Squamish.
“The committee is very excited to launch its first art competition and announce its existence,” says Anna Lippmann, Vice Chair of the Public Art Select Committee. “We hope this piece starts conversations about public art in Squamish and how we see the community we live in. The project is meant to connect different neighborhoods in Squamish while representing the unique characteristics of each place. We look forward to seeing the creative range of submissions.”
Submissions will be reviewed by members of the Public Art Select Committee, a committee comprised of local artists and residents with an interest in public art and a connection to the art community. The committee was formed earlier this year to help guide the Public Art Policy, make recommendations for future public art funding and adjudicate or select public art competitions and commissions.
Although locations for the Connecting Squamish Neighbourhoods project have yet to be determined, artists are encouraged to submit proposals that speak to both a specific location and Squamish as a whole.
The deadline for submissions is January 15, 2016. The installation of the artworks selected is expected to be completed by March 31, 2016.
